”Carl August Ehrensvärd was an admiral and head of the Swedish navy during the reign of Gustav III. He is best known today as a draughtsman, architect, and author. His artist friends included the painter Elias Martin and the sculptor Johan Tobias Sergel. Ehrensvärd was a dedicated neoclassicist who viewed Greek Doric architecture as the ideal model. During his Grand Tour he devoted special study to the temple sites of Paestum and Agrigento in Sicily. Ehrensvärd’s programmatic work, Journey to Italy 1780, 1781, 1782, is presented here for the first time in English translation with a detailed commentary by Sten Åke Nilsson, professor emeritus of Art History, Lund University”.
