”Christo's Oceanfront Project was executed in August 1974, when he covered the King's Beach cove in Newport, Rhode Island, with 150,000 square feet of polypropylene fabric floating on the sea, attached to the shore by 42 anchors. After eight days the piece was dismantled and the beach was returned to its natural state. Oceanfront Project was part of an exhibition of outdoor sculpture entitled ’Monumenta’, held at Newport from August to October 1974. Included in the exhibition were works by some 40 contemporary artists. Professor Sam Hunter of Princeton University, assisted by graduate students from Princeton's Department of Art and Archaeology, directed the Newport exhibition. One of those students, Sally Yard, has written the text for this book, which includes an interview with Christo. The Italian photographer Gianfranco Gorgoni has contributed the visual documentation of the project. Christo, who was born in Bulgaria in 1935, studied in Paris, where he became associated with the nouveaux réalistes. He moved to New York in 1964. Christo has wrapped the Museum of Contemporary Art in Chicago with 10,000 square feet of heavy tarpaulin, and he has wrapped a mile-long coast in Australia with opaque fabric. In 1972, in a project called Valley Curtain, he stretched one million square feet of fabric across the Grand Canyon. His newest project is Running Fence, to be 24 miles long and 18 feet high, running inland from the sea in northern California.”
